Box Score MOSCOW, Idaho – The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team traveled to Idaho for a rematch against the Idaho Vandals today (Feb. 6). The Eagles made it a five-point game in the third quarter, but an offensive flurry from Idaho lifted them past EWU, 85-56.
"Idaho put on a clinic today and played extremely well and hard. I think early foul trouble really hurt us on both ends of the floor," said head coach
Wendy Schuller. "When you play teams who are in the championship race, you have to bring tremendous energy every second of the game and we definitely didn't do that today."
The Vandals held an early 7-2 lead before the Eagles settled in and used a 6-0 run to tie the contest, 10-10. Idaho would out-score EWU in the final minutes on a 7-3 run to lead 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.
After the Vandals used a 5-0 run to build their largest lead of the game, 25-16, Eastern Washington called timeout.
Kallie Schaplow made a jumper to stop the run out of the break and
Grace Kirscher would make a three-pointer to keep EWU in the game down the stretch, cutting into a 29-21 Vandal lead. Idaho continued to pull away, using another 7-0 run to build a 36-21 advantage. Eastern Washington did get the final say, closing the half on a 4-0 run after layups from Burnham and Kirscher to trail 36-25 heading into the locker room.
Nuria Cunill immediately put points on the board for EWU to start the second half to make it a 6-0 run that spanned two quarters. The Vandals pulled back ahead 43-31 before the Eagles used a 7-0 run that was highlighted by a Kirscher three-pointer to put Eastern within striking distance, trailing 43-38. Idaho responded quickly and exploded on a 15-0 run to lead 58-40 with a quarter to play.
It was all Idaho in the fourth quarter, as it outscored Eastern Washington 27-16 in the final 10 minutes en route to the 85-56 victory.
WIN-LOSS RECORDS: The Eagles fall to 6-11 on the year and 5-7 in Big Sky Conference action. Idaho improves to 11-5 and 10-2 (Big Sky).
TOP PERFORMANCES: Maisie Burnham scored in double figures for the 12
th-straight game, leading the Eagles with 14 points in 22 minutes of action. She was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line.
Grace Kirscher added 10 points with two three-pointers.
Aaliyah Alexander had eight points and led the team with three assists, three steals and six rebounds. Nuria Cunill grabbed five rebounds and
Gabrielle Jung contributed with eight points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Eastern Washington shot 40.7 percent overall on 22-of-54 from the field to go with six three-pointers. At the free throw line, they were 6-of-8.
Idaho shot 43.7 percent and were 31-of-71 from the field. They made 12 three-pointers and were 11-of-15 from the free throw line.
Eastern Washington was out-rebounded 45 to 29 and committed 23 turnovers to Idaho's 15. Eastern scored 12 points off of turnovers while the Vandals scored 34.
UP NEXT: Only three regular season home games remain for Eastern Washington, and two will take place against Montana State this coming week at Reese Court. The Eagles host the Bobcats on Thursday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 13, with tip-offs set for 6:05 p.m. and 12:05 p.m. Pacific time, respectively.
