CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team returns to competition as they open the 2022 spring season in Missoula, Mont., against Montana this Friday, Jan. 14 at 11:30 a.m. Pacific time at the Peak Racquet Club Tennis Court. Following the match, the Eagles stay in Missoula, Mont., to battle against Air Force on Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. PT.
EWU has an overall series record of 6-49 versus Montana with their last victory dating back to April of 2019 after a 5-2 victory at home. Last season, the Eagles battled the Griz to a 1-6 deficit on the road.
Montana is led by head coach Jason Brown, who enters his fifth season at the helm. Last spring, Brown led the Griz to 9-10 overall with a 3-1 Big Sky Conference record.
Eastern Washington currently holds a 1-8 overall series record versus Air Force with their last victory dating back to January of 2007 after a 6-1 victory on the road. The last time EWU faced the Falcons dates back to March of 2017 when the Eagles hosted the Falcons in a close battle which ended in a 3-4 deficit at home.
Air Force is led by head coach Dan Oosterhous, who enters his 13
th season at the helm of the Falcon program. Last season, Oosterhous led his squad to an overall 8-12 record with victories against Big Sky opponents Weber State, Idaho State and Montana.
This season, the Eagles look to compete against six non-conference opponents and eight Big Sky Conference foes, before concluding the season with the Big Sky Conference Championships on Apr. 28-30.
Following the opening two matches to the new season, the Eagles look to host four home matches beginning with Montana State on Sunday Jan. 23, Whitworth on Friday, Feb. 4, Seattle on Sunday, Feb. 13 and Whitman College on Saturday, Feb. 19.
Succeeding the home streak of matches, EWU hits the road for six away matches before returning home, beginning with Weber State on Friday, Feb. 25 and Idaho State on Saturday, Feb, 26.
In March, the Eagles travel to face NAU on Sunday, March 6, Portland State on Friday, March 11, Portland on Saturday, March 12 and Boise State on Friday, March 18.
On March 19, the Eagles return home to host Montana before ending the month with an away match at Gonzaga on March 26.
The Eagles conclude the regular season in April following two home matches versus Idaho on Saturday, April 2 and Sacramento State on Thursday, April 7.
The Eagles are coached by
Jared Burnham, who is in his third season at Eastern Washington. Last year, after a tough spring season, the Eagles finished 0-13.
EWU departs only one senior in
Martin Bats, who finished last season with a 1-3 mark in conference action. The Eagles also look to return six players, including senior
Jeremy Mueller, to continue their efforts.
The Eagles also return juniors
Manuel Balce and
Wout Doumen, along with sophomores
Erik Grimes and
Bruno Ortega. Additionally, Eastern Washington welcomes four newcomer in
Prabhdeep Sangha,
Drew Dillon,
Steven Paz and
Brady Thomas.
