The second day of the Big Sky Conference Track and Field Indoor Championships continued today (Feb. 25) in Bozeman, Mont., at the Worthington Arena for the Eastern Washington University track and field teams.
In all, the Eagles brought home two All-Conference performers in
Zach Klobutcher (pole vault) and
Bobby Say (long jump), who both finished second in their respective events. Eastern also collected three new all-time top-ten marks in
Chris Homen (heptathlon),
Madelyn Knight (60-meter hurdles) and Klobutcher.
With one day remaining in the championships, the EWU men are in fifth place with 24.5 points. The Eagles are currently 8.5 points behind Idaho and 12 ahead of Montana. On the women's side, the Eagles are in eighth place with 13 points and are six points behind Montana and six ahead of Sacramento State.

Klobutcher had a personal record today in the men's pole vault with a mark of 16-11. This mark is second in the Eastern Washington University record book on the all-time top-ten list replacing his previous mark of 16-8 3/4. This mark is just shy of Larry Still's school record mark of 17-0 3/4.

Say placed second in the men's long jump with a mark of 23-8 1/4. It marked the second All-Conference honor of his career and the first indoors.

Chris Homen and
Quintin Porterfield added points to the team with their solid fifth and sixth place finish in the heptathlon," stated Kerr.
Â
The men's heptathlon wrapped up this morning with its final events. Homen placed fifth overall in the heptathlon with 4,661 points. This places him ninth on the EWU record book all-time top-ten list.Â

In sixth for the heptathlon is Porterfield who finished with 4,593 points.
Elijah Conley finished ninth in the heptathlon with 4,487 points.
Ryan Rieckmann finished 10
th with 4,222 points in the heptathlon.Â

Most of the events today were prelims. Finals in the events will happen at tomorrow's meet.Â

"Even though most of the finals are tomorrow, we put some more points on the board today," explained head women's coach
Marcia Mecklenburg.Â
In the men's 400-meter dash prelims
Daniel Gaik placed sixth with a time of 49.24 qualifying him for finals. He also placed third in the men's 200-meter dash prelims with a time of 22.02 qualifying him for finals.Â

"On the track, Gaik had a tough go but still put together strong races and will advance to finals in both the 200-meter and 400-meter," explained Kerr.Â

Joe Gauthier placed third in the men's 60-meter dash prelims with a time of 6.82 qualifying him for finals.Â
Â
Kerr said, "Gauthier shined on the 60-meter and will be a part of a dynamite 60-meter final tomorrow."

Colton Kautz competed in the men's weight throw and placed 10
th with a mark of 56-10 1/4.Â

Kerr stated, "It was great to have
Brayden Freitag score in the vault as well."

Freitag competed in the men's pole vault and place eighth with a mark of 15-1 1/2, while
Danny Maxwell,
Logan Allen,
Alec Kness and
Marcus Lemon all competed in the men's distance medley and placed eighth with a time of 10:44.78, earning two points for the men's team.

Brock O'Neal competed in the men's 800-meter prelims and placed 13
th with a time of 1:56.26. This time is a personal best for him.Â

"Capping his collegiate indoor season, O'Neal pieced together a lifetime best in the 800-meter," explained Kerr. "
Logan Allen had a nice personal record in the 60-meter but won't be advancing to the finals."

Allen competed in the men's 60-meter prelims and placed 13
th with a time of 6.95.

In the 60-meter hurdle prelims
Madelyn Knight placed 13
th with a time of 9.01. This time places her fifth on the EWU all-time top-ten list where she previously had a time of 9.02. Knight is now tied for fifth with Sarah Frey who also had a time of 9.01 in 2010.Â

"In the running events Petsch automatically qualified for the finals in the 60-meter by winning her heat of the prelims.  That final is going to be a nail biter," said Mecklenburg.Â

Katie Petsch placed third in the women's 60-meter dash prelims with a time of 7.63 qualifying her for finals.Â

Samiah Kuntz also competed in the women's 60-meter dash prelims and placed tenth with a time of 7.76. Kuntz was just shy of a qualifying time to move onto finals.Â

Maggie Nelson competed in the women's long jump and placed sixth with a mark of 18-4 1/4. After her third-place finish in the pentathlon yesterday, she now has scored nine points for the Eagles.

Mecklenburg explained, "Nelson doubled back from the pentathlon to place sixth and score for us. I couldn't be more excited for her. Nelson is having a great championship meet."

In the women's shot put
Kaitlyn Paller placed sixth with a mark of 44-10 3/4.
Carissa Stovall also competed in the women's shot put and placed eighth with a mark of 44-4. Paller and Stovall both had personal records in the women's shot put while earning three points for the Eagles.

"In the throws today, the goal was to get at least two shot putters in the finals with both of them scoring. We accomplished that with personal records and sixth and eighth place finishes from Paller and Stovall," stated Mecklenburg. Â

Jenni Bissell,
Haven Nutting,
Madilynn Carr, and Nicole Deherrera competed in the women's distance medley and placed 10
th with a time of 12:39.83.Â

"This team loves to compete. Tomorrow will bring more great performances and memories for our team," explained Kerr.

Mecklenburg stated, "Tomorrow should be an exciting day as we move into the finals of the remaining running and field events."
