Men’s Tennis Clashes with Idaho this Saturday

The Eagles welcome the Vandals for another Big Sky rival matchup

CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team continues its streak of home matches as they welcome Idaho this Saturday (Apr. 2) to the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse at 1 p.m. Pacific Time start. The Eagles continue to search for their first Big Sky victory as they currently hold a 0-6 conference and 2-12 overall record.

Eastern returns after hosting Boise State and Montana last weekend. The Eagles fell to the Broncos (5-2) but found some success with Jeremy Mueller earning a win at the No. 1 singles spot (6-0, 2-6, 6-4). Erik Sarlvik also grabbed a point for the Eagles at the No. 4 spot (3-6, 6-3, 6-2).

Against Montana, Eastern would fall 7-0 but still found momentum during the match with Manuel Balce and Wout Doumen teaming up at the No. 2 spot to win their doubles matchup, 6-4.

KNOWING YOUR OPPONENT: Idaho

Eastern Washington holds an all-time series record of 7-34 against Idaho. The Eagles last faced the Vandals a year ago in Cheney in which they fell 1-6. Jeremy Mueller was the lone victor after collecting the singles point for EWU at the No. 6 spot (4-6, 6-2, 11-9). The Eagles last win was in April of 2019 when they defeated the Vandals, 5-2, at home.

Idaho is led by Daniel Hangstefer who enters his fourth season at the helm. Last spring, Hangstefer guided the Vandals to the Big Sky Conference Tournament for the first time in three years, winning the North Division title and earning the No.1 seed, collecting an overall 7-6 record.

Hangstefer currently leads his squad to a 5-10 overall and 1-1 conference record. They are returning after defeating NAU, 4-3, on the road.
