Eagles Set Four New All-Time Top-Ten Marks at the Whitworth Peace Meet

Daniel Gaik, Bobby Say, and Katie Petsch set new all-time top-ten marks

The Eastern Washington University men's and women's track and field teams stayed local today (April 8) in Spokane, Wash., competing at the Whitworth Peace Meet at the Whitworth Pine Bowl. 
 
This meet was a dual scoring meet. The men's and women's teams beat each opponent head-to-head at the Whitworth Peace Meet. The men's and women's teams beat Gonzaga, Idaho, Lewis-Clark, Montana Western, Spokane Community College, Washington State, Whitman, Whitworth, and Central Washington.
 
Four new all-time top-ten marks were set at the meet. Daniel Gaik set a new record in the 100-meter. Bobby Say set a new record in the triple jump. Katie Petsch set two new records one in the 100-meter and the second in the 200-meter. 
 
Between the women's and men's teams 13 events were won. The women's team won six events and the men's team won seven events. 
 
Gaik set a new record in the Eastern Washington University record book on the all-time top-ten list placing first in the men's 100-meter with a time of 10.65 placing him eighth in the event in the record book. 
 
Say placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 49-6 1/2. This mark ties him for second in the EWU record book all-time top-ten list in the men's triple jump tying for seventh place with Lloyd Scott who set the record in 1974. 
 
"Once again, the weather cooperated. It may have been a little breezy, but we had some great performances today. Leading the way was Petsch in the 100-meter and 200-meter. She had another great meet, setting personal records in both of those events and winning them," explained head women's coach Marcia Mecklenburg. 
 
Petsch set two new all-time top-ten marks. She placed first in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.78. This time places her sixth in the EWU record book on the all-time top-ten list. She also placed first in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.56 placing her 10th in the EWU record book on the all-time top-ten list for the 200-meter dash. 
 
"It was a great day for the Eagles. You could sense the underlying importance of today's meet as we turned a big corner towards the outdoor championships. The guys know we can't take everyone to the conference championships and generated a number of strong performances in the battle to earn a spot on the championship team," explained head men's coach Stan Kerr.
 
In the men's 100-meter dash Joe Gauthier placed second with a time of 10.66. Logan Allen also competed in the men's 100-meter dash and place fifth with a time of 10.94. 

"Gaik had a huge day in winning the 100-meter and 200-meter in lifetime best performances," stated Kerr.
 
Gaik, Allen, and Liam Bracken competed in the men's 200-meter dash placing 1-3-4. Gaik placed first with a time of 21.52. Allen placed third with a time of 22.25. Bracken placed fourth with a time of 22.25. 

Camden Phelps and Lucas Robert competed in the men's 400-meter dash and placed second and third. Phelps placed second with a time of 52.26. Robert placed third with a time of 52.84. 
 
Justin Roosma competed in the men's 1,500-meter and placed fifth with a time of 3:58.97. Cameron Stuard placed seventh with a time of 4:00.55. This was a personal record for Stuard. 
 
"Stuard had a personal record in the 1,500-meter while our distance runner based 4x400 squad won the 4x400," said Kerr.  
 
Daniel Maxwell, Alec Kness, Brock O'Neal, and Lucas Robert competed in the men's 4x400-meter relay and placed first with a time of 3:25.75. 
 
Garrett Peoples and Colton Kautz placed first and third in the men's discus throw. Peoples placed first with a mark of 154-2. Kautz placed third with a mark of 146-11. 
 
Peoples and Kautz also competed also in the men's hammer throw. Peoples placed third with a mark of 187-11. Kautz placed fifth with a mark of 175-5. 
 
Peoples also competed in the men's shot put and placed second with a mark of 53-9 1/4. 
 
"Throw-wise, Peoples continues to shine with winning the discus and placing third in the hammer throw," explained Kerr. 
 
Ryan Rieckmann placed second in the men's javelin throw with a mark of 186-10. 
 
"Say, Alex Bishop and Zach Klobutcher continue to show why they're the core of our jumps program with today's performances by posting wins and strong showings under less-than-desirable wind conditions," explained Kerr. 
 
Bishop competed in the men's high jump and place second with a mark of 6-8.
 
Say and Quintin Porterfield competed in the men's long jump. Say placed first with a mark of 23-4 3/4. Porterfield placed fifth with a mark of 21-10 1/4. 
 
Klobutcher and Braydon Freitag competed in the men's pole vault and placed first and second. Klobutcher placed first with a mark of 15-7 1/4. Freitag placed second with a mark of 15-7 1/4. 
 
Madelyn Knight, Alyssa Hoffman, and Felicity Hempstead placed 3-4-5 in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Knight placed third with a time of 14.88. Hoffman placed fourth with a time of 14.95. Hempstead placed fifth with a time of 15.42. 
 
Haven Nutting and Faith Kennedy placed second and third in the women's 400-meter dash. Nutting placed second with a time of 58.84. Kennedy placed third with a time of 59.96. 
 
"Hoffman dropped time in the 400-meter hurdles running in the 63's this week and also winning that race," stated Mecklenburg.
 
Hoffman, Knight, and Lidiya Pankova placed 1-4-5 in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Hoffman placed first with a time of 1:03.17. Knight placed fourth with a time of 1:07.00. Pankova placed fifth with a time of 1:07.17. 
 
In the women's 1,500-meter Madi Carr, Lilly Fetzer, and Nicole Deherrera placed 2-3-5. Carr placed second with a time of 4:42.33. Fetzer placed third with a time of 4:48.21. Deherrera placed fifth with a time of 4:49.60. 
 
"In the distances, Carr and Fetzer led the way with personal records in both of those events and placing second and third closely by Deherrera with another personal record performance for a fifth place finish. It is great to see our distance crew putting up some good times," stated Mecklenburg.
 
In the women's discus throw Carissa Stovall and Kahlani Schloss competed and placed second and fifth. Stovall placed second with a mark of 141. Schloss placed fifth with a mark of 130-4. 
 
Stovall also competed in the women's shot put and place second with a mark of 45-8. Dyvhine Fonoti also competed in the women's shot put and placed fifth with a mark of 40-4 3/4.
 
In the women's hammer throw Vernice Keyes placed first with a mark of 177-8. 
 
In the women's javelin throw Madison Tareski placed first with a mark of 147-5. Maggie Nelson also competed in the women's javelin throw and placed second with a mark of 142-4. 
 
"In the throws Tareski and Vernice Keyes won the javelin and hammer respectively. I was pleased with those victories as we pushed the training pretty hard this week. Kudos to Stovall who finished second in both the discus and shot put with big personal Records in both of those events. She finally broke 140 in the disc and 45 in the shot put, said Mecklenburg. 
 
In the women's long jump Katrina Terry competed and placed fourth with a mark of 16-7 3/4. 
 
Savannah Schultz placed first in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12-10. Katrina Terry and Hally Ruff placed third and fourth in the women's pole vault. Terry placed third with a mark of 12-4. Ruff placed fourth with a mark of 12-4. 
 
Mecklenburg explained, "In the jumps, Schultz came out on top for our pole vault crew. That is two weeks in a row, winning the vault so it is good to see her getting consistent."
 
Rosalie Folger-Vent competed in the women's triple jump and placed third with a mark of 34-5 1/2. 
 
"I felt today's meet started to show a broader picture of the talents and gifts that this team has. It's exciting to see this growth as we move deeper into the outdoor season," stated Kerr. 
 
Mecklenburg stated, "Overall, the team performed very well. They definitely made it tough for us to pick the travel squad for the next meet. That is a good problem to have, though."
 
Next the Eagles will be splitting squads and will compete at the Whitworth Twilight on Apr. 14 in Spokane, Wash., at the Whitworth Pine Bowl. They will also be heading to Long Beach, Calif., Apr. 14-16. at the Jack Rose Track.
