CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington men's tennis team hits the 2023 spring schedule on the road against Gonzaga this Wednesday (Jan. 18) at 2 p.m. Pacific time at the Stevens Center in Spokane, Wash. Four days later, the Eagles invite the Montana to Cheney (Jan. 22) for a 10 a.m. PT home match.
The Eagles are coached by
Jared Burnham who is in his fourth season at the helm. Last year, the Eagles found two victories in Whitworth University and Whitman College, defeating both schools 6-1 and 7-0 respectively. The young Eagle squad ended the season with a 2-16 overall and an 0-8 conference record.
EWU graduated four seniors last season in
Jeremy Mueller,
Wout Doumen,
Manuel Balce and
Prabhdeep Sangha, and lost
Erik Grimes who left Eastern Washington after two full seasons. Five players return in an Eagle uniform, including one junior in
Bruno Ortega and four sophomores in
Drew Dillon,
Steven Paz,
Erik Sarlvik and
Brady Thomas.
Additionally, Eastern Washington welcomes two newcomers in
Tyler Dalos from Boise, Idaho and
Caden Kammerer from Longmont, Colo.
SCOUTING GONZAGA
The Eagles hold an overall series record of 39-28 versus Gonzaga and currently sit at an eight-match losing streak with their last victory dating back to February of 2012. EWU's last time out against GU saw a 4-0 deficit on the road back in March of 2021.
Gonzaga is led by head coach Jonas Piibor who enters his fifth season at the helm. Last season, Piibor led the Zags to 18-6 overall and a 6-3 record in the West Coast Conference.
SCOUTING MONTANA
EWU faced UM twice last year and fell 7-0 in both matches, as they currently hold an overall series record of 6-51. Eastern Washington's last victory versus the Grizzlies dates back to April of 2019 in a 5-2 victory at home.
The Griz are led by head coach Jason Brown, who enters his sixth season at the helm and looks to repeat another winning season after finishing the 2021-22 campaign 15-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play. UM finished its prior season in the semifinal of the Big Sky Conference tournament, losing to top-seeded Idaho 4-1.
