The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team hosted Idaho State today (March 19) to the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse for its third Big Sky Conference match of the season in which another thrilling battle ended in a 4-3 deficit for the hosts. The Eagles ended their busy weekend 0-2 and move 2-9 and 0-3 in conference play.
We had another tough conference battle today. We came up short on the team score, but it wasn't for lack of effort and energy by the Eags. I'm very proud of the turnaround in energy today. We played with purpose and the desire to compete. That's all I can ask every time we step on the court," head coach
Dustin Hinson said. "We definitely had our chances in the matches we lost and we will continue to work on executing pressure situations and building confidence in our ability to finish points at the right time. This was a very impressive weekend for [Scout] Mathews at number one singles. I'm happy with the way [Isabella] Foshee and [Kenzington] Mann rebounded from tough losses yesterday to come out on top today."
The Eagles began on a good note with
Renata Gabuzyan and
Kenzington Mann winning the first doubles match at No. 3 over sisters Sol O'Lideadha and Lola O'Lideadha, 6-3. The Eagles looked to continue their momentum, but fell short in the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches to give up the doubles point, in which both losses saw a 6-3 score.
Scout Mathews brought back hope for Eastern, fighting for victory over Hana Cho at the No. 1 spot after two sets, 6-4, 6-4. The win marks her second in a row at the No. 1 spot after taking down North Dakota's No. 1, Nyah Kauders, yesterday. EWU then dropped the No. 3 and No. 4 singles points, but continued to hit well with
Renata Gabuzyan winning her second set at No. 2 singles 6-4. The match would ultimately fall in favor of the Bengals in the third set and mark a 4-1 overall score for ISU.
The Eagles ended the match how they began, winning at the No. 5 and 6 singles spots.
Isabella Foshee took down Leah Kuruvilla (6-2, 6-2) and
Kenzington Mann clashed back against Stefanya Shalakhova in a tie breaker third set, 10-8.
