The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team hits the road for a Big Sky Conference matchup at Sacramento State this Friday, March 24 in Sacramento, Calif. The Eagles begin with first serve set for 1 p.m. Pacific Time at the
Sacramento State Tennis Courts. The next day, on March 25, EWU sets course to take on William Jessup for a 3 p.m. PT start time at the Falcons Tennis Complex in Rocklin, Calif.
Eastern is coming off a 5-2 defeat against North Dakota after hosting the Hawks in Cheney, Wash., last weekend. Although the Eagles came up short, they found success against their Summit League opponent with
Caden Kammerer winning at No. 4 singles (6-4, 6-2) and
Bruno Ortega picking up a victory at No. 6 singles (6-4, 6-1).
Drew Dillon also fought hard, winning his first set in singles play, 6-4, but fell in the third set tiebreaker 10-8.
Scouting Sacramento State
The last time EWU faced Sac State dates back to senior day of last season in which the Eagles hosted the Hornets, falling 5-2. Victories from departed Manual Balce and sophomore
Steven Paz gave Eastern its dual points.
Sacramento State is currently on a three-match win streak following wins over Portland State (5-2), Montana (5-2) and Saint Mary's (6-1). The Hornets currently hold a winning overall 9-3 record with an unbeaten 2-0 conference standing. They are led by Kevin Kurts who is in his sixth season at the helm and 18th season at the program.
Scouting William Jessup
Saturday's match versus the WJU Warriors will mark the first time in school history these two programs have faced off. Jessup competes in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) and currently sits sixth in league play with a 1-4 record. Chris Tolson sits at the helm of the WJU program, entering his second season as head coach and leading his team to an overall 5-7 record.
