Throwers make noise in Ellensburg as Eags approach end of regular season

EWU Track and Field has just one weekend of competition remaining before conference championships

MISSOULA, Mont. / ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The Eastern Washington track and field team turned in their second-to-last regular season performance of the year on Saturday, competing at the Montana Open in Missoula, Mont. and the Central Washington University Wildcat Invitational in Ellensburg, Wash. The Eagles secured 16 podium finishes, highlighted by wins in the men's javelin and women's discus at CWU.

"I am happy we are moving in the right direction," said EWU Director of Track and Field Erin Tucker. "The throwers had a great day at Central Washington and everyone that competed at Montana figured some things out they can use to get better next week."

Ryan Rieckmann, after setting a new career mark at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. last week, won the javelin in Ellensburg with a throw of 65.93 meters. His 67.49 meters mark from last week remains 3rd in the Big Sky this season.

The Fonoti sisters — Dyvhon and Dyvhine — also made noise at Central, earning 1st and 3rd, respectively, in the women's discus with marks of 45.65 and 44.20 meters. Both are new personal bests and Dyvhon's mark puts her 3rd in the Big Sky.

The Eagles have just one weekend of competition remaining on the schedule before the 2023 Big Sky Championships in Greeley, Colo. on May 10-13. They'll split again next weekend, with some headed to Tuscon, Ariz. for the Desert Heat Classic while others will go to Corvallis, Ore. for the Oregon State High Performance meet. The team will be off the weekend of May 5.

"We will take a small group to Arizona to try and hit some NCAA first round marks as we prep for Big Sky," added Tucker. "The rest of the team will head to Oregon State to keep building that PR train we have been on!

"I like where we are, but I am pushing them to keep getting better every day."
