CHENEY, Wash. — With the regular season opener against North Dakota State looming next week, the Eastern Washington University football team will hold its final team scrimmage of training camp on Saturday afternoon at Roos Field.
"The three or four days at the end of this week are those days where you're preparing still fundamentally, but also preparing for the opponent," head coach Aaron Best said after the team's first scrimmage on Monday. "Our coaches have already started doing work over the summer for the first few games as far as breaking film down and getting ahead."
While many veterans and team leaders have stepped up throughout camp, which began back on Aug. 3, Saturday's scrimmage represents an opportunity for younger roster members to earn a spot on the limited traveling squad. The Eagles depart for Minneapolis on Sept. 1 for their Sept. 2 opener against the Bison at U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings.
"A lot of our young guys, those guys who are fighting to get on the plane (to Minneapolis) will be playing on Saturday, while our established guys will be watching and rooting those guys on," Best added.
The offense earned the unofficial win in Monday's rescheduled scrimmage, played after being postponed from last Saturday due to poor air quality caused by nearby wildfires. Quarterback
Kekoa Visperas went 9-for-10 through the air for 152 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Robert Mason III scored on 21- and 84-yard receptions. The offense scored five touchdowns and a field goal in nine scrimmage possessions, starting from a variety of assigned positions on the field.
Saturday's scrimmage will start at 1:30 p.m. and is expected to last approximately 60-70 plays. It will be free and open to the public, with limited amenities available (no concessions).
