Football - vs. Northern Colorado (Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m.) - Get Tickets
Eastern Washington plays its final game at Roos Field on Saturday for the 2025 season, hosting Northern Colorado. The game will be broadcast live on SWX and streamed live on ESPN+. Listen to the game live on 700 ESPN and the Varsity App with the voices of the Eagles, Larry Weir and Paul Sorensen.
The Eagles nearly pulled off an all-time upset this past weekend in Missoula, narrowly falling to No. 2 Montana 29-24. The Grizzlies jumped out to a 22-0 lead early in the second quarter, but EWU trimmed the lead down to eight (22-14) at halftime. Montana scored on its opening drive of the second half, but its offense was held in check the rest of the game. Trailing by 12 late in the fourth quarter, redshirt-freshman
Jake Schakel - making his first career start - engineered an 11-play, 63-yard touchdown drive, finding
Cole Pruett for the eight-yard score. With 1:01 left in the game, the Eagles' special teams recovered the onside kick and the team had an opportunity to take the lead. Schakel guided the team down the field once again, finding
Landon Cooper for an 18-yard completion. EWU also benefited from a pass interference penalty on the Grizzlies. As time expired, the Eagles suffered from a fumble and Montana was able to escape the upset bid at home.
Schakel passed for 451 yards on 43-of-63(68.3%) passing. The yards is tied for the 19th most in program history and most in a single game since December of 2021 when Eric Barriere had 530 against Montana. EWU out-gained the Grizzlies, 479 to 351 in total offense for the game.
Eastern Washington had two, 100-plus yard receivers against Montana, with Miles Williams grabbing 11 passes for 136 yards and Pruett finishing with 10 catches for 133 yards and one touchdown. It's the first game two eagle receivers have posted 100-yard games since the 2021 game against the Grizzlies ((Talolo Limu-Jones (215), Andrew Boston (141)). Williams now leads the team with 385 receiving yards and 33 receptions, scoring two touchdowns. Pruett has 225 yards on 20 receptions with one score.
Eastern's defense made adjustments against Montana, and held them to their season-low in yards. They allowed 177 yards between quarters two through four, after allowing 174 in the first.
The defense continues to be led by Read Sunn, who had seven tackles and one for a loss against the Grizzlies. Sunn is tied for fourth in the Big Sky with 10.0 tackles for loss, while being fifth with 77 total tackles. Drew Carter provides steady support in the secondary, tallying 62 tackles this season to tie for 13th in the conference.
Men's Basketball - at Seattle University (Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m.)
Eastern will continue its road stint as they take on Seattle University on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
This past week, the Eagles opened its 2025–26 campaign with three strong road performances against elite competition, showcasing growth, balance, and resilience. The Eagles battled No. 12 UCLA in their season opener, shooting an impressive 54% from the field in a narrow 80–74 loss at Pauley Pavilion. Isaiah Moses led with 15 points, while Alton Hamilton IV and Straton Rogers added double figures. Associate Head Coach Ryan Lundgren praised the team's unselfish play and poise, emphasizing the progress made despite the loss.
EWU continued its road stretch at Loyola Marymount, falling 70–62 after briefly taking the lead in the second half. Moses again paced the team with 15 points and five steals, while Kiree Huie and Johnny Radford added key scoring efforts. Lundgren noted that second-chance points proved costly but highlighted the team's defensive improvement and chemistry as major positives heading into conference play.
The Eagles capped the trip with a thrilling overtime battle at Colorado, where they pushed the Buffaloes to the wire before falling 102–97. Moses erupted for 30 points and five assists, while Hamilton (18 points, 8 rebounds) and Emmett Marquardt (13 points, 4-of-5 from three) fueled an offense that shot nearly 60% from the field. Despite the narrow defeats, Eastern's high-level execution, ball movement, and fight against three quality opponents underscored a promising foundation for the season ahead.
Women's Basketball - vs. Southern Utah (Thursday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.) - Get Tickets
EWU is back at home this week for a Thursday night matchup against Southern Utah. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. The Thunderbirds will rejoin the Big Sky Conference for the 2026-27 academic year.
Eastern started its 2025-26 season this past week, going 1-1 to open the year. The Eagles began with a 99-43 win over Northwest University at home. Eastern's 99 points is tied for the 8th most in program history for a single game and the most points scored since 2021 when they had 102 against Multnomah. The game started close, but EWU separated with a 10-0 run in the first quarter. They built a 46-14 lead at halftime and cruised to the win in the second half.
Ella Gallatin led the team with 21 points, while
Kourtney Grossman added 17 and eight rebounds. EWU shot 51.3 percent for the game and held Northwest to a 29.1 mark.
Eastern then traveled to play Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., falling to the Sun Devils 73-58. Eastern shot 36.8 percent in the game, while committing 19 turnovers. ASU shot 45.2 percent and scored 22 points off of turnovers in the game. True freshman
Elyn Bowers led the Eagles, scoring 15 points, while Grossman added 11 and nine boards.
Bowers scored 15 points in each of her first two games as an Eagle, while shooting 52.0% from the floor. Grossman has been close to double-doubles in both games, averaging 14.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
Southern Utah is 2-0 to start the season, knocking Washington State, 77-64 this past Saturday. They also recorded a 103-55 win over Park University-Gilbert to open the season. Through two games, Brooklyn Fely leads the Thunderbirds with 20.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game.
Cross Country – at NCAA West Regional XC Championships (Friday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m.)
The Eagles turn their attention to the NCAA West Regional XC Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on Friday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m., starting off with the women then the men to follow at 10 a.m.
Eastern Washington's men's and women's cross country teams closed out the Big Sky Championships in Bozeman, Mont., with the men placing seventh and the women eighth. Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Erin Tucker said the teams ran a bit conservatively, allowing the lead pack to separate early, but expressed confidence in their fitness and potential heading into regionals in two weeks.
The EWU men scored 204 points, led by Conner Wirth in 37th place (25:47.60), followed by Grady Fournier (38th), Owen Higgins (45th), Charlie Ledwith (54th), and Lucas Spurling (55th). The women finished with 224 points, paced by Sara Sanders in 31st (17:51.20), with Rylee Brandon (38th), Nattie Ruzauskas (57th), Adrienne Root (58th), and Emma Tomlinson (61st) completing the scoring lineup.
Women's Volleyball – at Montana State (Thursday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.), at Montana (Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m.)
Eastern Washington hits the road to the Big Sky State as they take on Montana State on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m., PST and then Montana on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. PST.
This past week the Eagles put together two gritty performances at Reese Court but came up just short in both, falling to Idaho State in four sets (20–25, 17–25, 25–20, 22–25) and to Weber State in three (20–25, 15–25, 23–25). The Eagles showed resilience, rallying against the Bengals to take the third set and battling late against the Wildcats, but untimely errors and opponent efficiency ultimately proved decisive.
Senior outside hitter Kalista Lukovich continued her strong play, tallying 18 kills and four aces against Idaho State, followed by 11 kills versus Weber State. Head coach Jon Haruguchi praised the team's fight and growth, noting standout efforts from Lukovich, Elle Bruegman (20 digs vs. Idaho State), and setter Anna Bolich (27 assists, six kills). Against Weber State, Cassandra Moeller provided a spark off the bench with a career performance, while Judith Bolomboy and Quincey McCoy anchored the block. Haruguchi emphasized that the group is "making really good strides" and "just coming up a little bit short," while players echoed optimism and focus heading into next week's Montana road trip.
