This Week in Eastern Athletics: March 31- April 6

Golf heads into the final stretch of the season, men’s tennis is back home for two matches, track’s outdoor season resumes, women’s tennis heads to the west side, soccer plays second match at home

CHENEY, Wash. — The calendar flips to April this week and Eastern Washington athletics keeps the spring season pace going. Women's golf is back in Arizona for its second-to-last tournament of the regular season. Men's tennis has two conference matches in and close to Cheney this weekend. Women's tennis takes a road trip to Seattle to take on the Redhawks. Women's soccer hosts Spokane Falls for its second match of its spring season. 

Men's Tennis – vs. Northern Arizona (Friday, April 4 at 10 a.m.), vs. Weber State (Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m.) - Free Admission

Eastern Washington hosts two of its final three home matches this weekend. Eastern begins against Northern Arizona on Friday, playing at the Stevens Center in Spokane at 10 a.m. On Saturday, EWU hosts Weber State beginning at 10 a.m. at the EWU Tennis Courts.


In program history, Eastern has a 5-16 record against the Lumberjacks, with a 4-6 mark at home.The Eagles have fallen in the last nine matches against the 'Jacks.

Against the Wildcats, EWU is 9-15 and 5-6 in Cheney. They have dropped the last five matches against Weber.


The Eagles had an exhibition match this past Saturday against Whitworth, defeating the Pirates 6-1. EWU won the doubles point to begin the match, and followed with five wins in singles. Tyler Waddock was dominant at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1 against Matthew Morrison. He partnered with Tyler Dalos for a 6-3 win at the No. 1 doubles spot. Caden Kammerer, playing at No. 4, won in commanding fashion as well, 6-0, 6-1 over Matt Froslan. 


Overall this season, Kammerer leads the team with seven singles' wins, playing at No. 4 and No. 3. He has five doubles wins, tying for the team lead. Waddock carries six wins at the No. 1 spot this season, adding five wins in doubles.


Women's Golf
– Cowgirl Classic (Wednesday-Thursday, April 2-3, All Day)

EWU is in Maricopa, Ariz. this week for the Cowgirl Classic, hosted by the University of Wyoming. The tournament will be two days, with two rounds on Wednesday and the final round on Thursday at the AK-Southern Dunes Golf Club. 

Last week, the Eagles were at the Nashville Invitational, hosted by Lipscomb University (March 24-2). At the Invite,
EWU placed 14th, with a final score of 948 for the three-round tournament. Berkley Ledesma added to her steady first season for the Eagles, shooting 230 (+13) and tying for 31st on the individual leaderboard. Gabriella Ilardi tied for 41st, shooting 232 (+16). 

Eastern has one more contest in the regular season before the Big Sky Tournament (April 14-16). They travel to Goodyear, Ariz. for the Bobcat Desert Classic (April 7-9). 


Track and Field – at Whitworth Peace Meet, Spokane, Wash. (April 4, All Day)


After a week-long break, the Eastern Washington Eagles are back in action and ready to compete. This Friday, April 4, they will stay local as they head to Whitworth University for the Whitworth Peace Meet, which will run all day.

The Big Sky Conference recently announced that Egypt Caitlin Simmons was named Big Sky Field Athlete of the Week on Monday, March 24. This marks Simmons' third recognition this season and her first of the outdoor season. She earned the honor after winning the long jump and finishing second in the triple jump.

At the Oregon Preview, the Eastern Washington University track and field team delivered strong performances, especially in the field events. Simmons excelled, taking first place in the long jump (6.00m) and second in the triple jump (12.58m). Zoe Dunn also impressed, setting a personal best of 11.56m in the triple jump, which ranked her 10th on EWU's all-time list.


In the hammer throw, Dyvhine Fonoti and Dyvhon Fonoti placed fourth and seventh, respectively. Blake Garza tied for sixth in the high jump.

Maddy Shekhawat continued his success from the indoor season, winning the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.08, moving to No. 2 all-time at EWU. Enoch Okoh also had a standout performance, finishing third in the men's 100m (10.73) and first in the 200m (21.57), claiming his first victory for EWU.


In the 800m races, Owen Higgins finished third (1:50.95), and Kaiya Sollie set a personal record (2:14.30), moving into ninth on EWU's all-time list. In the women's 400m, Diana Fernandez placed fourth, while Sydney Thweatt won the 400m hurdles with a personal best of 1:02.95.


In the women's 5000m, Nattie Ruzauskas finished with a time of 17:12.95, moving into ninth on EWU's all-time list, while Evan Peters placed seventh in the men's 5000m (14:24.01), entering EWU's record books at No. 8. Finally, Owen Higgins set a personal record in the 1500m with a time of 3:55.28.


Women's Tennis –
 at Seattle U (Sunday, April 6 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time)

The Eagles get back on the court this weekend as they travel to play Seattle U on Sunday in Seattle. First serve for the match will be at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. 


EWU and the Redhawks have faced each other 23 times in history, with Eastern leading 14-9 all time. Seattle won the last matchup a season ago against the Eagles, 4-3, at the Jim Thorpe Field House. 


Eastern was last in competition two weeks ago with two matches in California. The team faced Sacramento State on their home courts,
falling 0-7 to the Hornets. The next day, EWU dropped a 6-1 match against Pacific

Through the singles season to this point, Isabella Foshee and Leandra Nizetic each have four wins, with Foshee earning two against conference opponents and Nizetic getting one. Foshee also has four wins in doubles, while Nizetic carries four. 


Women's Soccer – vs. Spokane Falls (Sunday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m.) - Free Admission


The Eagles are back for their second spring game! Eastern Washington will face off against Spokane Falls at home on Sunday, April 6, at 11:00 a.m. at the EWU Soccer Field.

In their previous spring match, the Eagles secured a 1-0 victory over Washington State University. Delani Walker scored the game-winning goal, while Kamryn Willoughby earned a shutout in goal, keeping WSU off the scoreboard.
