CHENEY, Wash. — The Red-White Showcase put Eagle against Eagle, but Eastern Washington football still put on a show for the fans Friday night. The offense and defense went back-and-forth for nearly two hours in live game action, along with situational drives and practice drills. It was the defense at the end, winning 39-28 over the offense after racking up more big plays.
The offense and defense earned points for different statistics on the field. The offense scored by way of touchdowns and field goals, while the defense looked for interceptions and defensive stops.
The defense made the offense fight for every rushing yard, as Eastern had 20 carries for 63 yards - 1.7 per carry. They also disrupted the quarterbacks, with the defensive line recording four sacks. Caleb Manson, Trevor Thurman, Dishawn Misa and Isaiah Perez all found their way to the QBs on Friday night.
JoJo Maxey-Johnson and Dre Greeley each had an interception in the game. Zion Jones led the defense with six total tackles - five solo - and one for a loss. Drew Carter, Greeley and Maxey-Johnson also each finished with five total tackles
Putting the finishing touches on a sharp spring, Jared Taylor completed 10-of-11 passes for 100 yards, with two touchdown passes. Taylor found Landon Cooper for a two-yard score and Wesley Garrett for a one-yard strike.
Nolan Ulm led all receivers with six catches for 75 yards and a long of 24 yards. Boden Gardner also had six catches for 58 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jake Schakel. Cooper finished with 58 yards on four receptions, adding another touchdown from Nate Bell from 19 yards out.
Bell threw for 114 yards and one touchdown, completing 13-of-17 yards.
Soren McKee went 2-of-2 on field goals, connecting from 29 and 24 yards.
Along with live game series, the teams scored points through offense vs. defense drills. The wide receivers and tight ends went up against the defensive backs on one-on-one matchups. If the receiver caught the pass, the offense scored points, while an incomplete pass earned the defense points. Offensive lineman, tight ends and running backs also matched up against defensive lineman and linebackers. In this matchup, if the offensive player was able to get past the defensive player, the offense earned points and vice-versa for the defense.
With the conclusion of the Red-White Showcase and the spring practice, Eastern Washington now prepares for fall camp and the regular season. Eastern's 2025 season begins on August 30 at Incarnate Word.
