Complete Meet Results
Eagles picked up five victories – three for the men and two for the women – during a rare weekday meet for the Eastern Washington University track and field teams at the University of Idaho Open on Thursday (Jan. 23) at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho.
Senior
Jonah Mathews was a double winner, taking titles in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.93 in the finals and the 200 with a time of 22.02 to rank 10th in EWU history. Mathews had a time of 6.85 a week ago in Seattle to rank as the fifth-fastest time in EWU history.
Also, senior
Parker Bowden matched his own school-record time with a 7.97 time in the 60-meter hurdles to finish as the runner-up.
"Amongst the all solid marks in the running events, it was a thrill to see Parker match his record in the hurdles," said Eastern men's head coach
Stan Kerr. "The other crowd pleaser was watching Jonah win both the 60 and 200, with his 200 time ranking in the top 10 all-time. Overall, the meet went well for Eagles."
Also winning an individual men's championship was
Grant Shurtliff in the pole vault, while senior
Samantha Raines won the women's vault and
Vernice Keyes came away victorious in the women's weight throw.
"For the second Idaho meet in a row we had two event winners and once again they were Vernice in the weight throw and Samantha in the pole vault," said women's head coach
Marcia Mecklenburg. "Those two events continue to be our depth events. We finished the weight throw with six athletes in the top nine and then went 1-3-4 in the pole vault with four athletes placing in the top nine."
Eastern competed Jan. 10-11 in Moscow at the Vandal Open/Lauren McCluskey Multi. After last weekend's University of Washington Preview, Eastern returns to Seattle Jan. 31-Feb. 1 for the UW Invitational in which EWU's multi events athletes will also compete. The Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships take place on Feb. 27-29 in Pocatello, Idaho
Other Men's Top Performances
Senior
Grant Shurtliff improved his best in the pole vault by 3 1/2 inches to capture the Idaho Open title. He cleared 16-4 3/4, equaling the fourth-best indoor vault in school history. He entered the competition with the fourth-best pole vault in the league at 16-1 1/4 (the current leader is at 16-8 3/4), plus owns the league's best heptathlon score with 5,212 points. Shurtliff is from Springfield, Ore., and is a transfer from Lane Community College.
Eastern finished 1-2-4-5-7 in the pole vault, with freshman
Zach Klobutcher finishing behind Shurtliff with a mark of 16-0 3/4 to rank sixth all-time at Eastern.
Senior
Parker Bowden out of Spokane's Central Valley High School matched his school-record time of 7.97 in the 60-meter hurdles, but it was only good enough for a runner-up finish. Ben Doucette of Idaho had a time of 7.90 to win and overtake Bowden for the Big Sky lead.
Junior
Colton Kautz finished as the runner-up in the weight throw with a toss of 58-4, less than a foot from his season-best of 59-2 3/4. Senior
Killion McGinnis finished second in the high jump with a mark of 6-5, and EWU's 4x400 Relay team was runner-up with a 3:24.07 clocking.
Eastern's top performance by distance runners came in the 3,000 with a third-place finish by senior
Domenic Rehm with a time of 8:46.16.
Other Women's Top Performances
Sophomore
Vernice Keyes picked up her third victory in four meets this season, winning the weight throw with a throw of 56-11 1/2. Two weeks earlier, she won that event at the Vandal Open with a throw of 56-3 1/4, and she also won the Candy Cane XII title in December with a toss of 57-10 1/4 to rank ninth in school history.
Besides Keyes, Eastern had five other competitors finish in the top nine, all with marks of at least 50 feet. Senior
Madison Doepker was third with a mark of 53-9 3/4.
Senior
Samantha Raines won the pole vault for the second time in a meet this season, winning with a mark of 12-7 1/2. Eastern had a 1-3-4-9 finish in that event, with junior
Katrina Terry finishing third with a mark of 12-1 1/2.
Eastern sophomore
Alyssa Hoffman had a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 9.19. But she had a 9.16 time in the prelims to rank ninth in school history, with sophomore
Ami Njadoe clocking 9.21 in the prelims, .10 behind her 9.11 time as a freshman which ranks eighth. Freshman
Madison Wilson also had a 9.21 time in the finals to rank 13th all-time at Eastern and place third behind Hoffman.
Freshman
Rees Jacot led EWU's distance runners with a third-place finish in the 3,000 with a time of 10:45.80. Freshman

More Comments from Women's Head Coach Marcia Mecklenburg
On Meet in Moscow: "The Idaho Open provided some great competition with local Division I universities, Washington State and Idaho and some of the smaller local universities. As we get ready to head back to the University of Washington for our next meet we need to continue to stay focused as a team and plug away at improving times and marks."
On Top Performers: "
Aulane Mpouli had a great double in the long jump and shot put, with an18-foot long jump and a 41-plus shot put. Those marks will get some good points in the multis.
Rebecca Thareek's high jump is starting to come along as she inches closer to 5-5.
Alyssa Hoffman and
Madison Wilson's second and third place finishes in the 60 hurdles fired up our sprinters and hurdlers.
Katie Petsch and Ami Najdoe's fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 kept the showing strong in the sprints and hurdles. I liked
Maddie Drennen's fifth-place finish in the 800. It was good to see a middle distance runner in scoring position."
More Comments from Head Coach Stan Kerr
On Idaho Open: "We had a lot of personal records today. It's great to see the training paying off with strong performances in all the event areas. The indoor season presents unique challenges in terms of venues. I feel our newer athletes have done a terrific job of adapting to indoor competitions."
On Top Performers: "Domenic (Rehm) and are distance runners raced hard and are on track as we begin our stretch run to the indoor championships. Colton (Kautz) continues to throw well and may have been motivated by our women throwers who dominated their weight throw event. In a good preview of what's to come at the conference championships, Grant (Shurtliff) and Aaron (Pullin) shined in several individual events. Grant also led a 1-2-4-5-7 finish for us in the men's pole vault. "
