The Eastern Washington University men's and women's cross country teams competed in the 6K and 10K races in University Place, Wash., for the NCAA West Regional. This year's NCAA West Regional was hosted by the University of Washington at the Chambers Bay Golf Course this morning (Nov. 11).
The men finished 23rd overall and the women 24th. The teams competed against a number of other schools. The men and women's teams from Stanford University placed first from both races. Â
The men were led by sophomore Noah Hasselblad who finished with a time of 30:10.5 to place second in the all-time program record in the men's 10K. He finished in 84th place, four spots above his finish from last year.
Sophomore Cameron Stuard followed closely behind placing 102nd with a time of 30:35.8. His time is now the fourth fastest in program history for the 10K.Â
Hasselblad came to a close second to Paul Limpf's time of 29:17.5 in the 2008 NCAA Championships.
Marcus Lemon's time of 31:18.2 is now the eighth fastest in Eastern history. He placed 143rd in the race today.Â
"On the individual side, so many people ran so well but I have to highlight our top three guys," head coach Sam Read said. "Noah [Hasselblad], again times are really subjective to the course, I think that puts him in number one all-time in Eastern's history in the 10K. We have had a lot of amazing runners come through here so his performance today was really indicative of what his level can be. I think Cam [Stuard] is also in the top-five, Marcus [Lemon] made that top-25 list as well so just really cool to see those guys step up. The back-half of our pack, watching them work together, watching them slowly climb through the race was exactly how we planned. Just awesome to see them execute that game plan. We came away with two great races and a very happy coach."
There were 35 other schools competing alongside the women and 31 other schools competing for the men.
For the women's side freshman Faith Martinez led the team and finished 123rd with a time of 21.15.9 with redshirt-freshman Lilly Fetzer following behind clocking in at a time of 21.18.2 finishing 126th.Â
"On the women's side, incredibly proud of this group. They all had kind of their own story to get to the regional meet with ups and downs," head coach Sam Read said. "All seven runners put their best foot forward today. A testament to their determination and how badly they really wanted to perform here today. A huge step forward here today in terms of placing. We definitely moved up from years past and we're just so excited for the future. While times don't matter a ton in cross country, it is really cool to see six runners under 22 minutes. A really awesome accomplishment to do that all in the same day. It is hard to pick anyone to shout out because each person had such an amazing performance. I would like to highlight Nicole [DeHerrera] just for the season that she had, to keep believing through the rough patches of the season and to see that belief and hard work pay off at the end is just a testament to her. Incredible results on the women's season and today, I am very happy there."
Additional Comments from Head Coach Sam Read
"On the guys' side, a lot to be proud of here too. We really put our best team performance here in the season of the championship time and that's what you want from your athletes. I am really proud of them," Read added. "The guys had a lot of adversity for them this season and for them to keep battling, keep being strong and just having different people step up at different times, picking each other up, leaning on each other, is just a testament to what this team is. So I'm really proud of them."
This completes the men's and women's cross country season until indoor track and field starts.
