Eastern Washington women's tennis begins its fall schedule this weekend as it hosts the EWU Hidden Duals. The competition will run from Friday, Sep. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2. In addition to the Eagles, Montana, Idaho and Seattle will be competing for three days.
The Duals will take place at the EWU Tennis Courts, starting at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
"We are anxious to get started this weekend at our home tournament," head coach
Dustin Hinson said. "We will welcome some great players from the University of Montana, the University of Idaho and Seattle University. We are ready to get some matches under our belt so we can learn and build upon what we want to do moving forward. I'm excited to see our returners compete and also really looking forward to watching how our newcomers tackle competition on-court. The weather is looking great, so we will be able to have a nice weekend of matches at our outdoor tennis courts. The matches will start at 10 a.m. each day and we would love to see some great support from our EWU students and the Cheney community!"
Eastern will use its fall slate to prepare for the 2023 spring season. The Eagles were 3-5 in the Big Sky last season, going 4-12 overall. The team just missed going to the conference championships, coming up short in the final match against Idaho, 3-4. In the 2022 spring season, Eastern defended its courts well, going 4-2 in home matches.
The fall season will consist of three more competitions for the Eagles. Eastern will be in Stanford, Calif. for the ITA Northwest Regional from Oct. 14 to Oct. 18. The Eagles will then compete at the Gonzaga Tournament from Oct. 28 to Oct. 30. The fall schedule concludes at the San Diego State Fall Classic on Nov. 11 to Nov. 13.
The 2023 spring schedule begins at home on Jan. 13 against Seattle.
Hinson, in his 11th season leading the Eagles, returns five players from the 2021-22 squad. The group includes
Scout Mathews, who earned All-Big Sky second team honors for singles last season. The group also includes
Isabella Foshee,
Renata Gabuzyan,
Jennifer Kida and
Kenzington Mann.
Adding to his team's depth, Hinson brings in two international players with
Leandra Nizetic from Coesfeld, Germany and
Sara Vasic from Belgrade, Serbia. The roster is also bolstered by
Taylor Andersen, who transferred from Grand Canyon University.
