MOSCOW, Idaho — Eastern Washington Track and Field wrapped up another successful indoor meet on Saturday night in Moscow as the team earned multiple wins at the 2023 Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open at the Kibbie Dome.
Zach Klobutcher, a junior from Covington, Wash., set the EWU Indoor all-time record in the pole vault, clearing 5.21m (17-1) to earn the meet win. He was previously second on the all-time list at 16-11 ½.
The Eagles finished 1-2 in the men's weight throw as sophomore
Alax Grimes took first with 18.31m (60-0 3/4), good for 7
th on the EWU's all-time record book for indoor. Freshman
Bradley Fillis finished second with 16.54m.
"I was pleased with how we competed for our first true road trip," said EWU Director of Track and Field / Cross Country
Erin Tucker. "We had a lot of great performances, but Zach and Alax stood out the most. To break a school record on the pole vault and hit a barrier in the weight throw shows we are doing good things."
"We had about ten total PRs this weekend," Tucker continued. "I want to give a special shoutout to our staff, including our new trainer Carlie who has hit the ground running. We are extremely thankful."
Bobby Say took first in the men's triple jump at 15.04m (49-4) and second in the long jump with a 7.21 leap, just under his personal best in each event.
Savannah Schultz earned another win in the pole vault after tying for first last weekend at the Spokane Indoor Challenge, clearing 3.91m (12-9 ¾).
Hally Ruff took second with 3.76m.
Sophomore
Noah Hasselblad earned a win in the men's 3,000 meters with 8:28.13, just under 2 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Lucas Couron (4.60m) and
Corbin Luce (4.45m) went 5-6 in the men's pole vault behind Klobutcher.
Sophomore
Madilynn Carr finished 7
th in the women's one-mile run with 5:07.24, just outside Eastern's all-time top 10. Carr broke into the Eagles' top 10 in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:16.68 good for 5
th at the meet.
Sydney Thweatt (25.95),
Madelyn Knight (26.00) and
Samiah Kuntz (26.04) finished 7-8-9 in the women's 200-meter dash.
Pullman native
Cody Teevens (Jr.) finished 7
th in the men's heptathlon with 4,560 points, good for 10
th on the all-time EWU list, just behind a mark he set in 2022 (4,661). Junior
Elijah Conley was close behind with 4,545 (13
th EWU all-time).
Kaitlyn Paller earned 13.65m (44-9 ¼) in the women's shot put, good for second place.
Carissa Stovall took fourth in the same event with 13.44m.
Senior
Madelyn Knight narrowly set a new PR, posting an 8.75 in the 60-meter hurdles, good for 3
rd in EWU indoor history.
EWU will next compete on Saturday, January 28 at the Inland NW Invitational hosted by Whitworth University.
