Game Previews

Thursday at Weber State:
Eastern (21-7; 15-0) heads to Ogden, Utah on Thursday to take on Big Sky Player of the Week Dillon Jones and the Weber State Wildcats (15-13; 10-5). Sitting in third place in the conference standings, the Wildcats are 7-3 at home this season and won both their games last weekend (52-49 over Sacramento State on Feb. 16; 65-57 over Portland State on Feb. 18). Eastern won a tight one over the Wildcats in their first matchup, 75-71 in Cheney on Jan. 28. Angelo Allegri scored a career-high 28 on 10-for-12 shooting to lead the Eagles offensively. Cedric Coward added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jones scored 18 points but was held to just 4 assists. EWU has won 5 of 6 over Weber State.

Saturday at Idaho State: The Eagles wrap up their 2022-23 road schedule against Idaho State (9-19; 6-9) in Pocatello on Saturday, hoping to repeat an 81-68 win in Cheney on Jan. 26. EWU outscored ISU 53-38 in that game, pulling away late after a 2-point deficit headed into halftime. Allegri had 17, Steele Venters added 16 and Casey Jones picked up 10 as both teams struggled from outside, shooting an identical 25% from 3-point range. Idaho State has lost four in a row headed into the week and currently sit in 7th place in the conference. EWU has won 10 of 12 against the Bengals including the last four.

Monday vs. Montana State: Finally, EWU will host Montana State (19-9; 12-3) at home on Monday in a battle of the first- and second-place teams in the Big Sky. The Eagles squeaked away with a 70-67 victory on New Year's Eve in Bozeman, a game that saw 16 lead changes and 10 ties. Venters hit a 3 with 18 seconds left to give Eastern the lead. Again, Allegri (19) and Venters (17) led EWU scoring, while Montana State got 18 points and 11 rebounds from Darius Brown II. Eastern has won 8 of their last 9 against the Bobcats and last lost to MSU at home on Jan. 16, 2011.

Last Time Out

EWU clinched a share of the Big Sky regular season title with an 89-77 win over Northern Colorado in Cheney on Saturday afternoon. Allegri picked up his 5th double-double as an Eagle, scoring 22 and adding 11 rebounds. Ethan Price quietly filled the bucket for 19 points and Tyreese Davis dished out 9 assists. Eastern led 51-33 at half.

Seeking Rare Company

Still holding the nation's longest active winning streak (D-I) and longest in program history, the Eagles are on the cusp of some extraordinary milestones. They enter the week tied for 1968-69 Weber State for the best record to open Big Sky conference play at 15-0; no team has ever gone 16-0. EWU is also currently at 17-straight overall wins, one shy of the 1979-80 Weber State squad that won a Big Sky record 18 in a row.

The regular season title is Eastern's fourth ever, joining the 2003-04, 2014-15 and 2019-20 teams. The 2014-15 Eagles shared the honor with Montana, losing the tiebreaker for seeding before going on to win the conference tournament on Montana's home floor. A win or Montana State loss would clinch outright possession of the 2022-23 regular season championship and guarantee a #1 seed in Boise.
