The Matchup
The Eagles (18-7 overall; 12-0 Big Sky) battle the Vandals (9-16; 3-9), looking to repeat the first head-to-head matchup between the two teams this year, a 95-74 win in Cheney on Jan. 14. Five players scored in double figures for EWU, lead by Angelo Allegri with 18 on 8-of-11 shooting. Forward Casey Jones was just one point away from a double-double as he finished with 9 points and 10 rebounds, along with 3 assists. Cedric Coward chipped in 13 points and 4 rebounds off the bench.
Divant'e Moffitt led the Vandals with 29 points on 9-of-16 shooting while the Eagles held forward Isaac Jones — who ranks 2nd in the Big Sky in scoring and 5th in rebounding — to 14 points and 7 rebounds.
The Eagles have won 4 of the last 5 and 7 of the last 9 against the Vandals.
Saturday's game is the second half of a double-header in Moscow, as the EWU women will also battle Idaho at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
Eastern continued their program record-setting conference start with back-to-back wins at Sacramento State on Feb. 2 (82-63) and at Portland State on Saturday (98-88).
It was a tale of two halves against the Hornets on Thursday, as the Eagles went into the break down 35-34 before pulling away in the second. Again, five players scored in double digits for EWU, led by Allegri with 18, Tyreese Davis with 15 and Ethan Price with 14. The team shot a combined 31-for-48 from the field (64.6%), marking their best FG% of the season.
That FG% mark would stand only until Saturday, when the Eagles were clinical in finding the basket, shooting 66.7% (34-for-51) while piling up 50 points in the paint. Davis had a career night, scoring 27 points on 9-for-11 shooting and 7-for-9 from the free throw line, adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
Chasing 1,000
Steele Venters is just 10 points away from 1,000 for his career. He would become the 24th player in EWU history to reach the mark entirely as an Eagle. He ranks 7th in the conference in field goal percentage (46.6), 11th in points per game (15.2) and 6th in 3-pointers per game (2.12). Venters led the Eagles in scoring last season, scoring 550 (16.7 average) to rank 5th in the Big Sky, earning second-team all-conference honors.
Seeking Conference History
The Eagles' 12-0 start to conference play is the best in program history and best in the Big Sky Conference since Montana went 14-0 to start in 2011-12.
The Big Sky record for overall win streak is 18, set by Weber State in 1979-80.
Getting Noticed Nationally
The Eagles now rank 23rd in the collegeinsider.com Men's Mid Major Top 25, which is voted on by head coaches from around the country.
Head Coach David Riley was also recognized as ESPN's NCAA men's basketball Coach of the Week.
