Eastern Washington University sophomore
Rebecca Thareek recorded the fourth-best indoor pentathlon score in school history in a winning effort to highlight the first day of the Candy Cane XII Indoor Track and Field Meet on Friday (Dec. 6) at Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney, Wash.
Â
Two 55-meter hurdle marks in Friday's preliminaries were also recorded by Eastern athletes to rank in the top three in school history. Freshman
Nyenuchi Okemgbo had a time of 7.26 to rank third all-time at EWU among EWU women, while senior
Parker Bowden equaled his career best of 7.50 which is No. 3 on EWU's all-time list for men.
Â
Some field events and sprint and hurdles preliminaries also took place Friday, as well as the first four events in the men's heptathlon. The final three events of the heptathlon start on Saturday (Dec. 7) at 8:30 a.m. The remainder of the meet begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, with running events starting at 1 p.m.
Â
Thareek scored 3,410 points, ranking fourth all-time at EWU behind a trio of marks set by seniors, including the school record of 3,532 set by Dominque Butler last year. Thareek had the top high jump Friday of 5-5 to score 795 points, and the third-best long jump with a mark of 17-10 3/4. Her time of 8.78 in the 55-meter hurdles gave her 820 points.
Â
Bowden, a graduate of Spokane's Central Valley High School, is chasing the school record of 7.40 set by Greg Rooney in 1979, with Michael Dwyer No. 2 on the list with a 7.46 mark. Bowden holds the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.00 set in 2018.
Â
Okemgbo is from Richland, Wash., and graduated in 2019 from Hanford High School. She ranks only behind Tina Brockway (8.20 in 1993) and Seville Broussard (7.85 in 1998) on EWU's all-time leaders list.
