Four victories and an impressive Eagle debut by
Grant Shurtliff highlighted performances by the Eastern Washington University indoor track and field teams Saturday (Jan. 11) at the University of Idaho Vandal Open and Lauren McCluskey Multi at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho.
Â
Shurtliff, a transfer from Lane Community College, scored 5,212 points in the men's heptathlon to come just 10 points from the school record of 5,222 set by Kersee Lind in 2012. Shurtliff was among the four individual winners for EWU on Saturday – two for the men and two for the women – in the first meet of the 2020 calendar year for EWU.
On the first day of competition, Shurtliff had the top marks among the 18 competitors in the high jump (6-4 1/4, 749 points) and long jump (22-0 3/4, 748), and had the second-best shot put (40-6 3/4, 628) and third-best 60-meter dash time (7.38, 752). On the final day, he had the top pole vault (16-0 3/4, 880) and the fourth-best times in the 60-meter hurdles (8.80, 791) and 1,000 meters (2:57.81, 686). His pole vault mark ranks as the fifth-best in school history, Senior
Aaron Pullin, who scored 4,989 points as a freshman in 2016 to now rank third in school history behind Shurtliff and Lind, had 4,723 points at Idaho to place second.
Â
One of the top performances for the Eastern women came in the 60-meter hurdles when freshman
Nyenuchi Okemgbo finished as the runner-up with at time of 8.96 to rank third in EWU history. Sophomore
Ami Njadoe finished third in a time of 9.23 to rank 11th.
Besides Eastern, most local colleges competed, but the meet was not be scored. Classes resumed at EWU on Monday (Jan. 6), and Eastern's coaching staff was excited to see the Eagles compete for the first time since Dec. 6-7 when EWU hosted the Candy Cane XII in Cheney.
Â
"The Lauren McClusky/Vandal Open was a good welcome-back-to-track-and-field for our crew," said women's head coach
Marcia Mecklenburg. "The athletes were a little rusty coming off the holiday break. Even with that we had some great performances."
Â
"The team got off to a solid start today," said men's head coach
Stan Kerr. "The meet showed our crew came back from the holiday break ready to compete. We're still early in the indoor season and I know the momentum created today will carry us forward in many ways.
Â
Eastern will head to Seattle for the University of Washington Preview on Jan. 18.

More Comments from Women's Head Coach Marcia Mecklenburg
Â
On Top Performances at Vandal Open: "Topping the list of performances were our two event winners,
Vernice Keyes in the weight throw and
Samantha Raines in the pole vault. As the returning Big Sky outdoor champion it was good to see Sam vaulting consistently. It was especially great to see Vernice win the weight throw as a sophomore and pick up the first victory in her collegiate career. We had a number personal records and top eight performances in most of the events. As the season progresses the goal is to have more."
Â
More Comments from Head Coach Stan Kerr
Â
On First Competition in January: "In particular, I was really pleased with the effort put forth by our team today. It is terrific to be a part of a great group of competitors."
