Meet Results
The Eastern Washington University track and field teams picked up five more victories and three more improvements on EWU's all-time leaders lists as the Eagles closed the regular season Saturday (Feb. 15) in Nampa, Idaho, at the Bronco Challenge at the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center.
The victories included a pair of men's sprint titles for senior
Jonah Mathews in the 60 meters (6.97 seconds) and junior
Quintin Porterfield in the 200 (21.82). Porterfield's time was the sixth-fastest in school history, and the best in eight years for an Eagle.
Other victories were picked up by senior
Parker Bowden in the 60-meter hurdles (8.22), sophomore
Bobby Say in the triple jump (46-8) and junior
Garrett Peoples in the shot put (52-10 3/4). Eastern won three titles – two for the men and one for the women – on Friday's first day, which also featured three performances making their way onto EWU's all-time leaders lists.
"The team hung tough today," said Eastern men's head coach
Stan Kerr. "We accomplished a lot in every event area, especially in terms of meeting adversity head on and battling for the type of performance that helped the whole team get better. The effort put forth over the past two days resulted in new top 10 performances and/or season/lifetime bests, and that was good to see."
Besides Porterfield, sophomore
Nyenuchi Okemgbo had a time of 8.83 in the 60-meter hurdles to place third and improve by .02 upon her previous best of 8.85 set earlier this season. She ranks second in EWU history behind the 8.51 time of Seville Broussard-Hering set in 1999.
In addition, sophomore
Alyssa Oates and freshman
Madison Wilson both cleared 5-5 3/4 in the high jump to finish second and third, respectively. They are now ranked eighth with two others on EWU's all-time list, including a performance earlier this season by teammate and sophomore
Rebecca Thareek.
"We had a lot of personal record performances," said Eastern women's head coach
Marcia Mecklenburg. "It was fun to compete in that meet because we saw a lot of competitors that we don't normally see. We had a number of athletes make it to the finals. The personal records and advancers to finals are what you want happening when your next meet is the conference championships."
The meet was the final chance for Eastern athletes to improve their marks in advance of the Big Sky Conference Championships which take place on Feb. 27-29 in Pocatello, Idaho. Entering the Bronco Challenge, both the men's and women's teams had 20 marks that rank in the top 10 in the league, including five in the men's heptathlon and five in the women's pole vault.
"It was a solid two days of effort by our women," Mecklenburg added. "Next up, the Big Sky Championships."
Action at Holt Arena in Pocatello will begin Thursday, Feb. 27 with the men's heptathlon getting underway at 10 a.m. Pacific time, followed by the women's pentathlon at 10:15 a.m. The conclusion of the men's heptathlon begins on Friday, Feb. 28 (9 a.m.).
The regular portion of the Big Sky Indoor Championships begins Friday, Feb. 28 with finals in six field events starting at 12:30 p.m. Pacific time, with running events starting at 3:30 p.m. Most of Friday's running events will be preliminaries, but the finals of the 5,000 meters and distance medley relays will take place that day.
The final six field events take place Saturday, Feb. 29 starting at 9 a.m., with the running events beginning at 11:30 a.m. The meet is scheduled to conclude just after 3 p.m. Pacific time.
Prior to this weekend, Eastern had competed in three meets at the University of Idaho and two at the University of Washington, as well as the Candy Cane XII in December in Cheney.
"We're looking forward to fine-tuning every event over the next 10 days or so, and then head to Pocatello for the championships," added Kerr. "It's championship season."

More Comments from Women's Head Coach Marcia Mecklenburg
On Efforts by High Jumpers: "It was the high jumpers' day today. Alyssa Oats and Madi Wilson both jumped 5-5 3/4 and placed second and third. Those are outstanding marks for a sophomore and freshman. With
Rebecca Thareek in the mix, those performances are making the high jump a depth event for us."
On Improved Time by Okemgbo: "
Nyenuchi Okemgbo had another great performance on the 60 hurdles for a third-place finish. It seems like every meet she keeps dropping time in that event so it will be exciting to see what she can do at the Big Sky Championships."
On Other Top Performers: "
Hadassah Ward had another solid shot put performance by finishing second, and
Savannah Schultz led the vault crew today with a second place finish in that event.
Rebecca Thareek and
Aulane Mpouli competed in a whole mix of events from the shot to the several different jumps to the sprints and hurdles. They did a fantastic job and I know it is preparing them for a great Big Sky pentathlon competition in two weeks."
More Comments from Head Coach Stan Kerr
On Performances by Multi-Event Athletes: "
Grant Shurtliff presented a very solid case over the past two days as being the top multi-event athlete in the conference. He'll not be hitting cruise control though, as he knows two of his own teammates,
Quintin Porterfield and
Aaron Pullin, are capable of pushing him for the title. Quintin's top 10 performance in the 200 today made quite a statement to his readiness in going after the conference title in the heptathlon."
On Other Top Performers: "Carter and Dom's effort in the 3000 meters resulted in significant personal records for each of them.
Bobby Say won the triple jump and showed he's loading up for another all-conference performance in Pocatello.
Wins by
Parker Bowden and
Jonah Mathews showed their readiness for the conference championships in two weeks. Parker's school record in the 60 hurdles is likely to be broken again in the near future. A win by
Garrett Peoples in the shot put highlighted a really good weekend for our throwers. It's terrific to see them competing at such a consistent and successful level."
