Eagle Women Steal the Win at the L&C Invite

Eastern women won the final full-team meet of the year

RESULTS

For the final full-squad meet of the season, the Eastern Washington University cross country team raced at the L&C Invitational today (Oct 15th) in Estacada, Ore. The women's team finished in first place for the 6k and the men in eighth for the 8k.

"First off, I'm really proud of my women, coming out here getting a win. One thing that makes this team really special is we've just had so many people contribute to our top five throughout the year. We have people that have had solid races or off days and people come in and they step up and fill those gaps for those that might not have that A-plus race. I think our women have just so much potential that we can put those A-plus races all together on the same day and we are looking at a pretty good team. But that pack has really brought us a lot of our success so far this year so it's really cool to see that," said head cross country coach Sam Read.

The Eagles were led by freshman Faith Martinez (11th, 22:15.1) for the women's team and by sophomore Noah Hasselblad (6th, 24:33.6) for the men's. Right behind Martinez was redshirt freshman Lilly Fetzer (13th, 22:21.2) and sophomore Jasmin Muneton (14th, 22:22.2).

"Individually, Faith was just really aggressive and I love seeing that. She went out right with the leaders and kind of held on, as a freshman, that takes some guts and so that was a really cool race from her. And then it was awesome getting Kaitlyn back in our lineup today and some of our other girls just coming around at the right time. We are definitely looking forward to everything in two weeks," added Read.

The EWU women wrapped up the meet with a first place win with a total of 65 points and the men in eighth place with 195 total points. Competing teams were Oregon State, College of Idaho, Southern Idaho, George Fox, Eastern Oregon, Pacific Lutheran, Portland State and Southern Oregon.

"On the individual side, Noah upfront was battling the whole way, had some great spike wounds to remember his battle up there in the front but ran really strong and represented us really well upfront. Another really solid performance was Danny Maxwell running a personal-best time and just continuing to bring up the backend and raise the team as one is what we need to keep doing. Great run by Danny and Noah today."

For the final meet of the season, the EWU athletes not participating in this year's championships will compete their last time on Oct. 26 at the Sasquatch Invite at Downriver Golf Course.

On Oct. 28, the Eagles put it all on the line and compete at the 2022 Big Sky Conference Cross Country championships, hosted by Eastern Washington at the Fairways Golf Course in Cheney, Wash., for the first time since 2010. The meet is free for spectators to attend, and the men's 8k will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the women's 5k at 11 a.m. For more information, visit the championship central page HERE.

Additional Quotes by Sam Read:

"On the men's side, we came short of what our goals were coming into today. We had some bigger goals and we just couldn't put it together today. We weren't as aggressive as we needed to be from the start. Our mentality in two weeks at the conference just needs to be a little more of that aggressive mindset and I think if we have that, we will be back to normal and ready to go."
