The Canyon Invitational was the destination for 10 members of the Eastern Washington University track and field team as they competed Saturday (April 24) in the meet hosted by Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz.
Justin Roosma ran under the lights for the 3,000-meter steeplechase and he won the event with an EWU career-best time of 9:13.79. That mark moved him to No. 7 on Eastern's all-time top-10 list.
Highlighting the women's performances was
Katrina Terry, who was EWU's top finisher in the pole vault with a fourth-place finish and all-time personal record jump of 13-3 1/2. This jump moved her to No. 7 on Eastern's all-time top-10 list.
Women's Performances
Emmanuella Engle started off the day by placing third in the women's javelin with a mark of 147-10.
The women's pole vault was the next event with a field of 15 competitors. Following Terry,
Morgan Fossen finished at sixth with a mark of 12-11 1/2, and
Savannah Schultz followed at 12-5 1/2.
Men's Performances
Parker Bowden started off the men's performances with a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing with a near personal-record time of 13.89.
Jonah Mathews placed the highest for Eastern in the 100 meters with a time of 10.68 and earned a third-place finish. Following right behind Mathews was

Bobby Say was another who competed in two events. Say placed fifth in a field of 11 in the long jump, with a leap of 23-4 3/4. He concluded the night with a PR in the men's triple jump of 48-9 to finish second overall.
Additional Comments from Head Coach Marcia Mecklenburg
The Grand Canyon Invitational provided some great competition for the group of athletes that competed in Arizona.
Emmanuella Engle had the top finish on the women's side – in the javelin throw with a third-place finish. I know she was hoping to throw further, but there is no doubt in my mind that she has some big throws coming.
It was great to see Katrina Terry leading the Eastern vaulters. From one week to the next you don't know which vaulter is going to be the top dog for that day. This week it was Katrina's turn. It's exciting that she finished fourth with a new PR in the highly competitive event.
Overall, our intent for that group of athletes was to provide a meet that had a higher level of competition and in a location that had nice weather. I believe we accomplished that goal.
Additional Comments from Head Coach Stan Kerr
After such a long absence from this level of competition, it felt great to be back and competing against other top collegians and a handful of professional athletes. It turned out to be a great day for us.
The dividends from this caliber of meet go a long way in helping us to get better, both mentally and physically, for the upcoming conference championships and regional meet.
Bobby Say was a shining star today. His PR in the triple jump, after he had been competing over the four-hour period in the Phoenix heat, showed great character. We're looking forward to seeing what he will do at conference.
On the Horizon
Next Friday (April 30) and Saturday (May 1) the track and field team will be back at Oregon State University for the OSU High Performance Meet. The meet will begin at 10:30 am Pacific Time.
