Senior graduate transfer
Emmanuella Engle and sophomore
Bobby Say had personal records with runner-up finishes and made their marks in the Eastern Washington University Track and Field record book on the final day of the OSU High Performance Meet in Corvallis, Ore., on Saturday (May 1).
Engle had a throw of 158-3 in the javelin to finish second and move her up to No. 8 on EWU's all-time leaders list. The transfer from the University of Washington had her best on her first throw in the competition, and it held up as the lead until the finals.
Engle's previous best this season was 156-11 in her EWU debut on March 13 at the PNW Team Clash in Corvallis. She finished behind Oregon's Lauri Paredes (169-9) and ahead of Montana State's Carley Vonheeder (153-3). As a Husky, Engle's top performance was 150-4 in 2019, which also ranked eighth on the UW's all-time list.
"I think Emmy Engle's favorite track at this point in the season is definitely the OSU track," said Eastern head coach
Marcia Mecklenburg. "She hit a personal record in the first meet of the season at OSU and improved two feet on that mark today. What was even better was that she beat one of the top-ranked competitors in the Big Sky Conference from Montana State. That is definitely going to be a confidence boost as we head into Big Sky's."
Say had the best triple jump of his career of 49-4 1/4 to also place second and move into ninth in school history. His previous best was 48-9 one week earlier in Phoenix, Ariz.
The men's 4x100 relay was victorious with a 41.32 time, and consisted of junior
Joe Gauthier, freshman
Daniel Gaik, junior
Dimeji Adekanbi and senior
Jonah Mathews. Also victorious for EWU was senior
Parker Bowden in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.10, well below his school-record effort of 13.87 earlier this season.
In all, Eastern had four winners, seven runners-up and seven with third-place finishes at the two-day meet. Eastern has one more regular season meet remaining before heading to the Big Sky Conference Championships on May 12-15 in Ogden, Utah.
"The conference championships are just two weeks away," said Eastern head coach
Stan Kerr. "We've entered the championship stretch of our training plan. Being physically, mentally and spiritually ready to take care of business in Ogden, Utah, on Weber State's track is the focus now."

"It is great to see
Samiah Kuntz and
Katie Petsch continue to run in the low 12's in the 100. Placing second and third, respectively, was also a big plus."
"Overall it was another great meet for Eastern. We continue to have athletes improve and move up on the Big Sky lists. Next up, Whitworth Twilight."
Additional Comments from Head Coach Stan Kerr
"Our team had a solid two days of performances in Corvallis at the OSU High Performance Meet. The competition was great. It's a deeply encouraging feeling for us to participate in a meet of this caliber as we continue to navigate the COVID protocols that are leading us back to a new normal both on and off the track."
"
Bobby Say had another great outing in the triple jump with a significant PR.
Gavin Lee almost joined the 200-foot club in the javelin with the best toss of his life. Bobby and a Gavin are definitely primed for the conference championships."
"The 4x100 relay had one new member today,
Dimeji Adekanbi, and he ran well for a group that posted a nice win in that event for our team. We're expecting big things in the 4x100 relay at the championships."
"
Alec Kness battled through two tough races, the 800 and the 1500 to join
Justin Roosma (who set a school record in the steeplechase on Friday) as one of our contributors in this meet from the distance squad."
